Chris Hughton, the head coach of the Black Stars says he is looking forward to life competing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
On Thursday, October 12, in Abidjan, Ghana discovered their group opponents in the tournament that will be hosted in Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars have been paired with Egypt, Cape Verde and Mozambique.
“We know the competition is high and we know to do well, there will have to be a lot of factors that go our way but the biggest factor is preparation and performance and it’s impossible to do well in this tournament unless you perform well," the former Brighton manager told the Ghana FA media.
Ghana heads to the tournament on the back of its worst campaign in AFCON history as the Black Stars exited the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon at the group stage without a win including a 2-3 loss to Comoros in the final group game.
Ghana, however, will open their campaign on January 14 against Cape Verde before facing Egypt on January 18 before wrapping up the group games against Mozambique on January 22.
The 34th edition of the tournament, which Ivory Coast will host for the second time after the previous time was in 1984, will take place between January 13 and February 11, 2024.
Groups:
Group A: Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea Bissau
Group B: Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde Islands, Mozambique
Group C: Senegal, Cameroon, Guinea, Gambia
Group D: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Angola
Group E: Tunisia, Mali, South Africa, Namibia
Group F: Morocco, DR Congo, Zambia, Tanzania
