The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Peter Twumasi has indicated that there is nothing wrong with suspending football activities at state-owned stadiums for other non-sporting events.

The NSA boss came under criticism in December when he suspended football activities at the Accra Sports Stadium to rent out the venue to musicians for musical concerts.

Appearing before the Public Accounts Committee on Monday, Prof. Peter Twumasi defended the decision, insisting that the authority makes a profit after using some of the money to restore the damages done to the pitch as well.

“The calculations that we have done with the various events which have a certain component which we call the pitch insurance cover is able to restore. I think if you remember, before we shifted our sporting activities to other stadia we had made mention of this to all stakeholders that in December, it will be used for other events that are not sporting. And the revenue for it should be able to recover entirely everything,” Prof. Peter Twumasi said.

The NSA Director continued, “By January 9 my Minister sent an inspection team to come and check whether we have been able to recover the pitch and it is fully done. Other activities occurring in our stadia are not new. It’s done all the time.”
