Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed concern about the absence of Ghanaian right-back Tariq Lamptey from the team.

Lamptey, 22, missed his seventh consecutive match, against his former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, which Brighton won 2-1.

Lamptey sustained a knee injury during their 4-0 win against West Ham United last month and had to be substituted after just 16 minutes.

His return date is currently unknown, and De Zerbi fears that his absence could be a big blow to their aspirations of qualifying for European competitions.

“He is not available to play. It’s bad, bad news for us. He’s important for us because he has different characteristics, different qualities to Joel Veltman,” said De Zerbi ahead of the Chelsea game.

Joel Veltman, 31, has been the replacement for Lamptey during his absence. The former Dutch international played his 100th game for Brighton last Saturday during their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham.

With a busy schedule ahead, the absence of Lamptey puts additional pressure on Veltman.
